Beyond Chess Puzzle 005 Solution

In this scenario, White’s luck has run out and black is about to make it’s final move to win the game. Black moves its knight from b3 to e2, opening up an attack from the queen and cutting off a retreat from the king to c1. Black then shifts the tile from b1 to a1, removing an escape route for mate.

This mate is particularly brutal because moving the knight not only revealed the queen’s attack, but also positioned the knight into a supporting role. But it was the tile shift that removed white’s safety net, by shifting it into the line of attack. Now that’s a checkmate!
